My Girlfriend is Pregnant
It could be quite a shock if your girlfriend just informed you that she is pregnant and you are the father of the child. No matter how you look at it, this is a big deal. You probably never meant for this to happen. Maybe you really care about her and feel responsible to do something about it. Or maybe you didn't really want to stay with her forever. Either way, the emotions and pressure are running high.
Of course you feel shocked, anxious and fearful - maybe even depressed. Find someone you trust to talk to. Avoid acting like this didn't happen or putting it off. That won't make it go away. Face the facts so others can help you through this difficult time. Both of your lives have changed - but your life isn't over. You can find your way.
Resist jumping to conclusions and trying to hide the situation. Worse, do not think that abortion is an easy out - it isn't easy for anyone.
Here are a few tips for finding the best outcome.
  • Listen. She needs to talk.
  • Be a gentleman. Protect her. Let her know you are there for her, that you are in this together.
  • Go with her to talk to her parents.
  • Drive her to doctor's appointments.
  • Let her know you care about what she's feeling.
  • Be patient and understanding - this is new for both of you.
  • Admit there is no way you could know what she's going through but you are willing to help.
  • Let her know your thoughts, ideas and opinions.
  • Acknowledge and try to understand her feelings.
  • Learn about pregnancy by contacting us or someone you can trust.
If you don't agree
Perhaps you and your girlfriend do not agree on everything. Pressuring her won't solve anything. It is better to slow down and take your time when making important decisions. Talk with an options counselor you can trust regarding the pregnancy, parenting and adoption support services available.
You do not have to go through this alone. We can provide free, confidential and non-judgemental support for both of you.
